Suggestion & Self-Discovery

February 17, 2023

Within this Selfunwinding paradigm, there is a synergistic relationship between suggestion and self-discovery.

I recently had the experience of introducing some new movements in yoga that stimulated my unwinding in two ways.

First, these movements expanded my consciousness of other movement possibilities not performed in daily life or even previously within my unwinding practice.

Second, the movements opened sensation into some seemingly hidden spots that offered further points from which to unwind. These sensations inspired my body into even greater movement.

This activity of Selfunwinding seems to follow its own intelligence. I have come to trust this intelligence and am learning to trust it more all the time.

But the question arises of whether the unwinding I described above would have initiated without the suggestions from the yoga movements.

Expanding consciousness into new movements is available all the time. We humans are amazing mimics. To mimic is natural, as we see in children in all cultures.

And we can mimic and model movements from all manner of sources.

For instance, what if we imagined our chest wall to be like a bird cage and allowed movement to rise through the middle of our body like an umbrella? We could then allow the ribs to expand as this opening umbrella from underneath and then over the top and down the sides.

Take a moment and experience that suggestion.

Using such a suggestion inspires new movement and sensation. It invites expanding further into the three-dimensional plane, deepening the experience of unwinding.

Finding this balance between suggestion and self-exploration is part of our personal Selfunwinding process.

And as a facilitator of unwinding for others, this challenge is enacted in my quest to find the same synergistic balance between my support and the client's self-discovery.

In both cases, the most trustworthy guide and ultimate authority is the natural genius of the body.

Meeting this genius halfway with gentle suggestions and invitations, then listening ever more closely to its guidance, seems to be at the core of Selfunwinding.
